Ask the arborist – is my tree safe?

Edward Heinrich is an arborist based in Solihull where he runs the practice Umberslade Arboriculture.

The residents of Solihull often ask him questions, and each month, he’ll be sharing some of these, and the answers.

Q: There is a fungus growing at the base of a tree in my garden. Is the tree safe?

A: Not all fungi damage trees. In fact it is estimated that 90% of the fungi within a tree are beneficial to their host.

Those that do cause problems can be identified from their fruiting bodies (see the picture opposite).

I recommend that you commission an inspection of the tree by a qualified and experienced tree surveyor who should be able to identify the fungus and advise on future management.
